Murals for Mexico

2020

These murals were born from the friction of a 20-day experimental retreat in Mexico—a time defined by power struggles, domination from facilitation, and heavy group projections. It was a turbulent environment, but instead of moving away from the conflict, I let it open me up to what was true for me. I’d had enough of the dynamics, so I took the power back into my ands and invested the energy into the walls. My Prayer for Peace and Offering to the Ancestors of the Land.

While the primarily white folk in the group waited for permission or felt victimized because they weren't 'invited' to create, I simply asked and started. It was a clear mirror of entitlement versus initiation. I ignored the attempt to dominate the narrative, focused on my own thrive, and painted two murals as a prayer.

One of those, Divine Mother, was eventually covered up—which was always part of the deal. Impermanence. But when the artist who painted over it tried to profit by selling my designs on shirts without asking, I told him No. Whether it was the group chaos or the theft of the work later on, this era was my first real taste of owning my power. It was a ritual of taking my energy into my own hands and refusing to let it be handled by anyone else.
